Agar.io vs. Expanding Land — How They Compare
Agar.io launched in 2015 and single-handedly created the IO game genre. It's the game we all grew up playing, the one we still recommend to friends, and the reason this entire community exists. We love Agar.io — and Expanding Land wouldn't exist without it.
Expanding Land launched in 2026 as a love letter to that original experience — built from scratch in C with the goal of taking the formula further: bigger arenas, more real players, and a dynamic map. Here's how they compare side by side.

Where Expanding Land Adds More
Agar.io set the standard with 200-player servers. Expanding Land pushes that to 1024 concurrent players per arena — every one of them real. The map dynamically scales from ¼× to 4× based on how many players are active, so the action stays dense whether there are 20 people or 800.
That said, Agar.io's core gameplay is timeless. The split mechanic, the virus game, the tension of circling a bigger cell — that magic is the same in both games. Expanding Land just gives you more room to experience it with more people.
Built for the Future
Agar.io paved the road. Expanding Land is actively developed and building on that foundation. The pure C server architecture is designed to scale — there's significant headroom beyond the current 1024-player cap. New features, modes, and improvements are shipped regularly.
Because the entire server is written from scratch (rather than relying on third-party frameworks), every aspect can be optimized and extended. Check the changelog to see what's new.
Fair Play: Multiboxing & No-Bots Policy
Expanding Land takes a unique approach to fairness. Bots are strictly prohibited — there are no AI opponents, no bot accounts, and automated play is detected and blocked. Every cell you encounter is controlled by a real human.
Multiboxing is allowed but regulated: each player can run up to 4 accounts simultaneously. This gives skilled players the ability to multibox strategically, while keeping the playing field fair for everyone.
